How did two New Yorkers end up moving to Georgia and opening a pizzeria together?
Franky & Kevin: Franky had a family that lived here in metro Atlanta. He came down from NY to visit and at that time he noticed there were not a lot of mom & pop pizza places. Franky’s family have owned and worked in restaurants for over 30 years so when he visited Atlanta it felt like a good place to open a business and raise a family. Kevin and his wife moved here from NY after 9/11. He has been working in restaurants since he was 12 and when he visited Atlanta he fell in love with the city.
You’re about to hit your one-year anniversary....congrats! What was it like opening a restaurant in the middle of a pandemic?
Franky & Kevin: We were very nervous and confident at the same time. Nervous because of the uncertainty of opening in the middle of a pandemic, confident because we knew we had a superior product and a love for what we do.
What’s the pizza scene like in Duluth, GA?
Franky & Kevin: The restaurant scene in the Atlanta metro area is very competitive, and it is no different here in Duluth. There are lots of other mom & pop pizza places along with the big-name chains. We set ourselves apart by treating our customers like family and making sure that they know that they’ve just eaten the best pizza, made with lots of love.
Your restaurant places a huge emphasis on sourcing local ingredients (which we love!). What are some things that you look for when sourcing new ingredients for your pizza?
Franky & Kevin: We make our dough and our 3 signature sauces for our pizzas from scratch. When ordering ingredients our emphasis is on quality. We have to have that because we want to give our customers the best eating experience possible.
You were a part of our Pizza Across America program this past February; what other community projects have you been working on?
Franky & Kevin: Once a quarter we do “Dine & Dine” where 10% of the monthly sales on Tuesdays go to a local charity. So far we’ve done this initiative for 2 local non profit organizations Rainbow Village and Overcomers House.
How would you best sum up what being a pizzaiolo is all about?
Franky & Kevin: The best thing about running this restaurant is seeing people enjoying the food they make. Getting to know the repeat customers and making them become family. Also being a part of people's memories and celebrations.
